Wainuiomata to Vegas - Hip Hop Dancers Need Your Help

17.06.08 – From the streets of Wellington to the world’s best in Las Vegas, via the Opera House: It’s a curious journey but one that celebrated New Zealand champion hip-hop dance crew Legacy will take when they take on the world’s best breakdancers in Las Vegas in July. But first they need a little help.

Legacy Dance today announced Hip Hop Xposure, a special fundraising hip-hop dance and music concert held at the opulent Wellington Opera House, Saturday June 28. The Legacy Dance crew leads a strong line-up that features local hip-hop artists Flowz and Beatrootz, Wellington dance crews Emerge and Infinite, and Auckland’s Kaladyscope and TMC. The aim is to raise $40,000 to send the nine young Legacy dancers to Las Vegas for the 2008 World Hip Hop Dance Championship, to be held July 28-30 in Las Vegas where they will battle crews from 30 nations for international respect and bragging rights. “By no means will this be a cheap trip,” said Legacy Dance manager Liston Peilua. “We have a goal of raising $40,000 for the crew to attend but you couldn’t put a price tag on the experience these guys will have. “It’s a long way from the streets of Rongotai, Strathmore and Wainuiomata to the glitter of Vegas but it’s journey we’re determined to make,” he said.

Legacy Dance have taken New Zealand by storm since establishing the group in 2006. Legacy qualified for the World Championships by gaining a top two placing at the New Zealand championships on April 19.
In 2006, Legacy qualified for the finals of the World Championships, held that year in Los Angeles. Since then, Legacy have performed to over 45,000 people in New Zealand through sold-out shows A Hip Hop Legacy and The Chronicles. Legacy was awarded Best Newcomers and Highly Commended Dance Show at the 2008 New Zealand Fringe Festival.
